When it comes to the National Magazine Awards, there's never any surprises in who's going to lead the list, and this year, as in past years, it's the New Yorker, with 12 nominations, up from nine last year.

Right behind is New York magazine, edited by Adam Moss, up for nine. Last year it was up for seven.

Other multiple nominees include Vanity Fair, six, National Geographic, five, The Atlantic, three, and the tiny Virginia Quarterly Review, which is up for three as well.

First-time nominees this year include Babble, Budget Travel, Chow, Condé Nast's new business title, Portfolio, Domino, Good, Paste, Radar and several New York Times publications: The New York Times Magazine, Play: The New York Times Sports Magazine and T, The New York Times Style Magazine.

The winners will be announced May 1.
