Magazine newsstand sales slide again
Off 10 percent during the six months ended in December

Single-copy magazine sales, considered a good gauge of the health of the industry, continued their slide during the second half of 2011.
Newsstand sales were down 9.96 percent during the six-month period ended Dec. 31, according to data release this morning by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, the steepest slide in the last four reporting periods.
Sales went from 32,118,948 during the six months ended Dec. 31, 2010, to 28,919,153 for the same period in 2011, based on 408 consumer titles.
It has been years since magazines saw newsstand sales rise. Sales were down 9.15 percent during the six months ended last June, and down 7.27 percent in the six months before that.
The slide is certainly not a surprise.
Magazines have been hurting for some time, and ad pages ended 2011 down. Publishers are beginning to push new delivery methods, most notably tablets, after sales of tablet devices spiked last year.
And people have been cutting back on extras like magazines for years both during and after the recession, as high unemployment continues to cut into funds for impulse spending, like picking up a few celebrity tabloids at the supermarket checkout display.
Total paid subscriptions were up 0.72 percent, ABC reports, from 260,594,951 to 262,471,812.
With subscriptions representing the bulk of total magazine sales, overall paid and verified circulation was down only 1 percent, from 305,528,645 to 302,454,697.
Indeed, celebrity titles, which rely heavily on newsstand sales, were hit hard during the most recent reporting period.
Every title saw newsstand sales drop, most notably OK!, down 27.5 percent.
Even category leader People saw a 12 percent decrease in sales.
Personal finance titles also took a hit at the newsstand, with all four titles losing ground and three down by double-digit percentages.
Women's titles also slid, and O took the biggest slide of them all, down 32 percent on newsstands in the months after Oprah Winfrey ended her syndicated show.
