Magazine ad pages dip 3.1 percent in 2011
Hurt by fourth-quarter decline of 8 percent

The ad page slide that began midway through last year got worse in fourth quarter, leading to yet another year of ad page declines for magazines.
Ad pages fell 3.1 percent in 2011, according to the Publishers Information Bureau, from 169,552 to 164,225.
The declines were sharpest during fourth quarter, when pages were off 8 percent versus 2010, from 50,578.01 to 46,508.17.
Only four ad categories saw gains during fourth quarter, and six were off by double-digit percentages compared to the previous year.
Fourth quarter sped up the declines that began in third quarter, when pages dropped 5.6 percent. The second half of the year knocked out the slight gains seen during first half, when ad pages were up 1.3 percent.
The blame goes mostly on the economy. PIB noted that advertisers became more skittish during the second half of the year after consumer spending began to drop and the stock market saw wild fluctuations.
But there's also certainly a shift in advertisers' interest that's to blame as well. Many are moving money from print to digital, which is hurting newspapers and magazines.
It's been more than five years since magazines saw yearly ad page gains, and newspaper ad revenue has been declining for that long too.
For full-year 2011, three ad categories saw gains, led by financial, insurance and real estate, up the most with a 12.7 percent jump.
Apparel and accessories (up 5.5 percent) and the biggest category, toiletries and cosmetics (up 3.8 percent), also saw gains.
Food and food products saw the biggest declines. The category slid 17 percent, reflecting a greater advertising trend across all media as food companies cut back advertising to offset greater costs of production and transportation.
Home furnishings and supplies saw the second-biggest declines last year, down 16 percent, a dip tied to the volatile housing market.
Among magazines, Reader's Digest Large Edition and Departures had the biggest ad page gains, up more than 40 percent apiece.
Bassmaster saw the biggest decline among consumer titles, down 45 percent.
Overall ad revenue was up slightly in 2011, by $8 million, to $20,086,199,882.
