Consumer
magazines take a thrashing
Ad pages tumble by 12.9 percent over the third quarter

What was already looking like a bad year for consumer magazines got a lot worse over the summer, with ad pages falling nearly 13 percent compared to the same three months of 2007.
The steep third-quarter declines dragged down the first nine months of the year, to 164,125 pages, a drop of 9.5 percent. That compares to a 7.4 percent decline in the first half of 2008, according to the latest data from the Publishers Information Bureau.
Ad spending in dollars over the three quarters, based on rate cards before discounting, was down 5 percent, to $18,452,988,859, according to PIB.
Consumer magazines are suffering from a variety of ills, and these days the internet is just one of them. The weak economy and growing consumer fears have prompted marketers to dramatically cut back their spending, and it has hurt magazines more than many other media.
Those cuts spanned across all 12 categories of advertising tracked by PIB over the first nine months of the year. Automotive, once the top category, saw spending slashed by 23.6 percent.
Also seeing spending cuts, coming after several years of strong gains, were pharmaceuticals, with spending down 15.2 percent.
A big decline was seen as well in home furnishings, down 15.6 percent, reflecting the collapse of the housing market.
Further, of the 23 categories of magazines tracked by Media Life, all showed page losses for the first nine months of the year. That's a first since Media Life began tracking magazines by category eight years ago.
Hardest hit were the science and technology titles, which were down 24.4 percent. But also taking big hits were the outdoor titles, down 16.3 percent, and sports magazines, which were off 15.6 percent.
Coming out with the slightest declines were the fashion magazines, which fell just 1.6 percent in pages. Entertainment titles also came out with fewer bruises, with pages down 3.7 percent.
