Celeb titles settle in for the long race
Some show circulation gains, while others are off

Unlike most of the rowdy stars they cover, the celebrity magazines have become what appears to be a mature lot.
Years of booming newsstand growth has slowed, according to the latest numbers from the Audit Bureau of Circulations, released yesterday. In fact, four of the six major celeb titles were either down or flat compared to the same period last year.
But that comes after three of the six raised their newsstand prices, and if it indicates anything it's a confidence that consumers are sufficiently hooked on Hollywood gossip to continue buying their titles.
This seems to put the kibosh on the widely held belief that the field had become overcrowded and due for a shakeout, with one or two titles likely to fold.
The best evidence of that may be the performance of the newest magazine in the category, the British import OK!, which many had written off even before it launched three years ago as too late to the game.
OK! arguably had the biggest scoops of the most recent reporting period, the six months ended Dec. 31, with the Jamie Lynne Spears pregnancy exclusive and older sister Britney’s cover shoot meltdown, which set bloggers typing for weeks.
The magazine also saw the biggest celeb title circulation growth in that period, up 23.5 percent to a total paid circulation of 935,375. Its newsstand numbers also saw the largest jump of any celebrity title, up 7.1 percent to 550,510.
Us Weekly was the only other celebrity title to see its overall circulation grow, up 10.1 percent to just over 1.9 million. That was driven by subscription growth of 19.4 percent.
In Touch, Life & Style and People, all of which raised their cover prices during the reporting period, were flat or down, with Life & Style falling the most, 9.5 percent. Life & Style and In Touch slashed their rate bases last week in response to the new numbers.
Star magazine, the most downmarket of the major celebrity titles, slipped for the second straight reporting period, with overall circulation off 11.4 percent.
TV Guide saw some encouraging subscriber growth nearly two years after a makeover and a drastic rate base cut. Subscriptions were up 1.8 percent, to just over 3 million, though newsstand was off 16.5 percent, to 230,082.
A slowdown in newsstand sales was seen across many magazine categories over the six-month reporting period, notably women’s service. Eight of 14 magazines saw their single-copy sales decline, and three--Ladies' Home Journal, Redbook and Woman’s World--saw total circulation slip 6 percent or more.
The newsweekly category held few surprises. The Economist once again saw the most growth, up 12.8 percent in total circulation, to 720, 882, while Time continued to see the effects of a rate-base cut of a year ago, slipping 17.6 percent, to 3.35 million.
Penthouse and Playboy both saw double-digit newsstand declines, falling 11.4 percent and 35.8 percent, respectively.
