They’ve been the biggest story in daytime television for two years now, but can the long-snubbed ladies of “The View” finally win an Emmy for best talk show host?
That’s really the big question for this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards after nominations were announced on yesterday’s edition of ABC’s “View.” The quintet of Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd, Joyce Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck were nominated once again this year, the 11th year running for the show.
Their chance of winning would seem slim. They’re up against three-time winner Ellen DeGeneres, along with Kelly Ripa and Regis Philbin, who will receive a lifetime achievement award at this year’s ceremony.
Many expected “View” to pick up the long-awaited Emmy last year, in Rosie O’Donnell’s much-buzzed-about first and only season with the show, but instead DeGeneres won again.
In total, “View,” which is up 2 percent this year compared with last among total viewers, received seven of ABC’s 39 nominations. It was the second-most-nominated talk show, behind “Ellen” with eight nominations.
The show has previously won an Emmy for best talk show.
CBS led with 56 nods, including 17 for “The Young and the Restless,” more than any other daytime program. PBS was second with 50 nominations, 13 of them for long-running kids’ show “Sesame Street.” Disney Channel had the most cable nominations with 14.
The Daytime Emmy Awards will air on ABC on June 20. A list of major nominees appears below.
