Talk shows ride
high on the elections

Candidates get the chance to get warm and cozy

The cable news networks aren’t the only ones seeing ratings rise from the contentious presidential primary season.

Late-night and daytime shows have also gotten a boost from the never-ending carousel of presidential contenders, who seem to pop up on a different show each week.

Democrat Hillary Clinton’s appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” last Thursday lifted the program to its best outing of the week, averaging a 4.1 household rating, according to metered market data, with final ratings due out later today.

A week earlier, Clinton’s rival for the Democratic nomination, Barack Obama, dropped by “The View” and pushed the show to its best week since late February, with an average 3.67 million total viewers and 889,000 women 18-49.

And presumptive Republican nominee John McCain appeared on “Late Show with David Letterman” last week, on April Fool’s Day. The appearance drew a 3.4 metered market average, just 6 percent behind usual leader Leno, who the week before had topped Letterman by more than 20 percent.

The Democratic candidates’ “Saturday Night Live” appearances have also coincided with strong ratings for the show, though those cameos were unannounced.

Folksy appearances on talk shows have become an accepted and even necessary part of presidential campaigning these days, a long way from the novelty they held when Bill Clinton played saxophone for Arsenio Hall in 1992.

In fact, some credit Clinton’s genial spots on “SNL” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” with helping her to crucial victories in Texas and Ohio last month, by showing a different side of her than the tough, sometimes humorless Hillary on display during the debates.

The appearances also give candidates a chance to address touchy issues on their own terms, usually with an easier audience. During her Leno chat, Clinton made light of a recent campaign controversy in which she was quoted claiming to have faced sniper fire (it never happened).

McCain even informally announced his presidential bid last year on Letterman, and Obama’s wife has appeared on “The View.”
