Scoop: 'TMZ' is
pulling men in droves

Has the highest share of males of any celeb show

Oct 12, 2007

Nearly a month into the new syndication season, newsmagazine “TMZ” has emerged as the top new strip show, and by a large margin.

That may not be a great surprise, considering the spinoff of the web gossip site launched with loads of hype, but this is: The show is showing surprising strength with an audience, men, that typically tune out of the fluffy nightly newsmagazines.

For the week ended Sept. 30, the most recent available, “TMZ” averaged a 1.7 Nielsen household rating, more than double the second-highest-rated new show. A surprising share of its viewers were men, 41.8 percent.

The most the other celeb shows pulled was 33.5 percent, and some pulled lower. Those shows include  "Entertainment Tonight,” “Extra,” “Access Hollywood” and “Inside Edition.”

And among younger men, the ratings among the genders are close to even: 0.9 among men 18-34 versus a 1.0 rating among women 18-34, according to distributors Telepictures and Warner Brothers Domestic Television Distribution.

The likely reason is "TMZ's" edginess, where the focus is on real scoops more than celeb pandering. It's those scoops that brought the web site fame, and the show's producers vowed to keep that edginess rather than drift into the fawning, fashion-heavy coverage of traditional celeb newsmagazines.

“TMZ" reports almost always have a satirical edge, either making fun of the celebrities or spoofing trends the other newsmagazines overlook, such as movie stars who refuse to acknowledge they’re pregnant, visual evidence to the contrary.

Meanwhile, in other daypart ratings for the week ended Sept. 30, NBC’s “Meet the Press” once again finished first among the Sunday morning shows in total viewers with 3.61 million and among viewers 25-54 with a 1.1 rating. ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” was second in viewers with 2.71 million and among 25-54s with a 0.8, with CBS’s “Face the Nation” pulling 2.43 million viewers and a 0.7 among 25-54s. “Fox News Sunday” was fourth in viewers with 1.22 million and among 25-54s with a 0.4.

In late night, NBC’s “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” finished first for the week yet again, averaging 5.2 million total viewers and a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49. “The Late Show with David Letterman” on CBS had 3.9 million viewers and a 1.2 rating in the demo, with ABC’s “Nightline” bringing in 3.7 million viewers and a 1.1 18-49 rating. In late-late night, NBC’s “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” had 2.1 million total viewers and a 0.8 in 18-49s, with ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” averaging 1.9 million viewers and a 0.7, CBS’s “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” at 1.7 million viewers and a 0.6, and NBC’s “Last Call with Carson Daly” bringing in 1.3 million viewers and a 0.5 among 18-49s.

CBS had the largest audience for daytime dramas and full daytime, averaging 3.84 million for its dramas and 3.73 million for full daytime, but was second among women 18-49, pulling a 1.3 rating for both its dramas and full daytime. ABC had the second-largest audience, averaging 3.08 million viewers for its dramas and 3.17 million for its full daytime lineup, and was first among women 18-49 with a 1.5 rating for its dramas and a 1.5 for full daytime. NBC had an audience of 2.11 million for its dramas and full daytime, and was third among women 18-49 with a 1.2 rating for each.
