Media mogul:
Oprah by the numbers

Winfrey is already the richest woman in America

It was once called the golden touch. These days it's the Oprah touch.

With Tuesday’s announcement that Oprah Winfrey is launching a cable network next year, the top-rated daytime talk show host will soon have a major presence in every form of media. There's already her syndicated TV show, an upcoming broadcast reality series, her own XM Radio channel, O, the Oprah magazine, and Oprah.com.

That's all given her enormous clout as a shaper of American opinion, which became even clearer when Barack Obama won her endorsement and saw a jump in his numbers leading into his surprise win in Iowa two weeks ago.

With her new cable network, OWN, co-partnered with Discovery Communications, Winfrey is aiming to spread her feel-good message to entire families.

Here’s a look at the Winfrey empire by the numbers.

“Oprah” remains the No. 1 daytime talk show by a wide margin, a spot she’s held for 21 years. The show has won every sweeps period since its 1986 debut.

Season to date, her show is averaging a 5.6 Nielsen household rating, down 15 percent from last season but still 22 percent ahead of No. 2 “Dr. Phil,” which is produced by Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, as is No. 5 show “Rachael Ray.”

Winfrey’s print venture has been equally successful. O magazine sold $311.6 million in advertising last year, up 8 percent over the previous year, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. The women’s lifestyle publication was also up 4.2 percent in ad pages, from 2,028.57 in 2006 to 2,113.55 in 2007, compared with a 0.6 percent decrease for all magazines tracked by PIB last year.

The magazine has a total circulation of more than 2.4 million, and subscriptions were up 7 percent during the first half of 2007, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Oprah.com, the site that includes information on her syndicated show as well as her book club, ranks No. 4,169 among the billion or so sites on the web, according to internet information tracking company Alexa.com. It ranks No. 1,264 in the U.S., and it draws more than 4 million visitors per month, generating an average 68 million page views.

In November, Winfrey launched a channel on YouTube that has generated more than 800,000 views.

Oprah’s Book Club has more than 1 million online members. Each of the 60 books she’s selected so far has become a bestseller, spurring more than a million books sold since its inception in 1996.

In September 2006, Winfrey launched her XM Radio channel, which includes regular TV contributors Nate Berkus, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Bob Greene and more, in a deal worth $55 million.

Winfrey’s net worth is estimated at roughly $2.5 billion, making her the richest woman in America. She’s appeared on the cover of dozens of magazines, prompting record sales for publications from Runner’s World to InStyle to Vogue.

Though Winfrey’s acting career has been mostly dormant since her 1998 film “Beloved,” the one-time Academy Award nominee (for “The Color Purple”) has remained involved with films. She produced Denzel Washington’s recent “The Great Debaters” as well as a number of TV films, including hits “Their Eyes Were Watching God” and “Tuesdays with Morrie” for ABC.

That network will also carry Winfrey’s upcoming reality show “The Big Give,” in which contestants receive money they can use to help other people.
