For Joe College,
a 'Family Guy' summer

Among 18-24s, syndicated comedies are No. 1

Jul 31, 2009

Ratings for syndicated television are nothing if not predictable, with a handful of shows like “Wheel of Fortune,” “Jeopardy” and “Oprah” among the highest-rated programs year after year.

But that’s not the case with college-age adults. The big syndicated shows among 18-24s this summer are reruns of network TV sitcoms, according to a new analysis of Nielsen ratings by the Syndicated Network Television Association.

They're also the top shows overall among this demographic. That age group is watching syndicated shows more than any other type of TV this summer.

By far, the highest-rated show among 18-24s is the syndicated version of Fox's “Family Guy,” which for the period May 25 through July 12 averaged a 3.2 C3 rating. C3 are ratings for commercials viewed live or up to three days later in DVR playback.

In fact, eight of the 10 highest-rated syndicated shows in the demographic are comedies, including “King of the Hill,” which ranked No. 2 with a 2.4 rating, “George Lopez” with a 2 and “Everybody Loves Raymond” with a 1.6 rating.

By comparison among 18-24s “Oprah” had a 0.8 rating. “Wheel” and “Jeopardy” each pulled a 0.7 rating.

While comedies dominate viewing this summer among 18-24s, a handful of first-run syndicated shows rank among this demographic group’s most-watched shows.

The highest rated of these is talk show “Maury” at No. 9 with a 1.2 so far this summer.

Entertainment newsmagazine “TMZ” and court show “Judge Judy” each had a 0.9.
