'World News' ratings dip to lowest in decades

Jun 25, 2009

This is a corrected version of the story. An earlier version in today’s issue incorrectly referred to NBC in the headline. It is the CBS “Evening News” that hit an all-time low. Media Life regrets the error.

The broadcast networks’ evening newscasts have been losing viewers for a generation as people shifted to 24-hour cable news networks and the internet.

But that didn’t make it any easier for ABC and CBS last week when each network saw its evening news program sink to an all-time ratings low.

Certainly, a contributing factor was that both CBS's Katie Couric and ABC's Charles Gibson were on vacation. There's also the arrival of summer, a slow time for TV viewing generally.

Yet another likely factor is a decline in the big stories that have dominated the news for much of the past year, from the race to the White House to the collapse of the U.S. economy and efforts by the new president to put things back together.

In fact, all three networks were down last week. The difference was that in the case of ABC and CBS, the declines reached into record territory.

ABC’s “World News” attracted an average 6.4 million viewers for the week, its smallest audience since Nielsen began using its people meter to track national TV audiences in the 1980s. That was down from just shy of 7 million viewers the prior week.

“Evening News with Katie Couric” drew an audience of just under 4.9 million viewers, its lowest ever, and down from 5.4 million viewers the prior week.

Both networks also hit historic lows in adults 25-54, their target demographic, ABC with a 1.4 and CBS with a 1.1.

NBC’s “Nightly News with Brian Williams,” the longtime No. 1 show, fared better, drawing 7.8 million total viewers for the week, but it was also down by roughly the same number of viewers as ABC and CBS. The prior week it averaged just under 8.3 million viewers. NBC had a 1.8 rating in 25-54s

Last week's NBC ratings didn’t include Thursday or Friday, when the broadcast was temporarily retitled “Nitely News” during NBC’s U.S. Open coverage.
