Cable recap
Third for Lance, a big win for Versus
By Kevin Downey
Jul 29, 2009 - 11:03:11 AM

America may not be a country of cycling fans, but the Tour de France isn’t just any bike race, and seven-time Tour winner Lance Armstrong isn’t any ordinary racer.

In the three-week long race, which ended this past weekend, Armstrong finished third behind teammate Alberto Contador of Spain, but just being in the race was enough to drive up ratings rather smartly for Versus.

As of Friday, with two days yet to go, some 43 million people had tuned in for at least some of the Tour, up 31 percent from last year's full Tour coverage.

On average, 509,000 people tuned in each day, up 97 percent from last year.

In each of the network's key demographics, men 18-34, men 18-49 and men 25-54, viewership was up more than 100 percent.

Certainly much of the credit goes to Armstrong, who came out of retirement to compete.

It's no surprise that ratings would be up.

His fame has long extended way beyond cycling because of his bout with cancer, the two books he's written since, and his very public relationships with celebrities like actress Kate Hudson and singer Sheryl Crow, among other reasons.

And while many had all but ruled out an eighth Tour win for Armstrong--he's now 38 years old--he did well enough that it remained a possibility until the final days.

That kept the race in the headlines and people watching on Versus.

But credit for the surge in ratings also goes to Versus and Tour commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen for making this often very-hard-to-follow sport a lot easier to understand, and more exciting.

In addition to hardcore cycling fans, the coverage attracts a lot of viewers who wouldn't normally tune into Versus, if only to gaze at the lush French countryside and the hundreds of brightly colored riders streaming by.

This year's tour began July 4 and covered a distance of some 3,500 kilometers (2,175 miles) in 21 stages, seven in the mountains.

The Tour also helped boost Versus' overall July ratings. From June 29 to July 27, Versus averaged 250,000 viewers in primetime, up 43 percent from July 2008. It was up 78 percent in adults 18-49, to 137,000 viewers.

For the week ending Sunday, Versus did even better. In primetime, Versus averaged 307,000 viewers and 158,000 in the 18-49 demographic.
