On cable, thirst
for junk is still growing

Spinoffs of two top auction shows debut to big audiences

Fox's attempt at piggybacking on the cable craze over other people's junk didn't work out too well last summer, when "Buried Treasure" was one of the season's biggest bombs.

But on cable the craze continues to flourish.

New spinoffs of two of the genre's biggest hits are putting up very strong numbers, if not quite as strong as the shows they were spun from.

History's "Cajun Pawn Stars," an offshoot of the original "Pawn Stars," grew in its second week, always a promising sign for a new show.

"Cajun" averaged 3.8 million total viewers for back-to-back episodes Sunday at 10 p.m., according to Nielsen, up from 3.6 million for its debut the previous week.

By comparison, "Pawn," History's top show, averaged 6 million viewers for two episodes Monday at 10 p.m.

The second major spinoff, A&E's "Storage Wars Texas," came a bit closer to matching the show it spun off of. "Texas" averaged 3.78 million viewers in the Tuesday 10:30 p.m. timeslot, just 1 million fewer than the original "Storage Wars."

But "Texas" had a big advantage over "Cajun:" It airs as the lead-out to the original "Storage" while "Cajun" launched on a separate night from its predecessor.

History and A&E wisely chose not to mess with success in developing the two new shows.

Like "Pawn," "Cajun" follows the exploits of a family-owned pawn shop, this one located in Louisiana rather than Las Vegas, but with the same sort of quirky characters coming into the store.

And "Texas," which last month became the most-watched series premiere in A&E history, is the same as the original except it's set in Texas rather than California and features a different set of bidders.

In "Storage," bidders compete to acquire the contents of abandoned storage units, hoping to find something that will bring in big money at auction.

The continued popularity of these four shows, as well as truTV's "Hardcore Pawn" and PBS's "Antiques Roadshow," isn't just about the junk, though that's certainly a big part of it.

It's also about the personalities and the feeling that it isn't always just about the money. There are also themes of respect and an interest in history that give junk shows their appeal.
