Solid debut
for TBS's 'George Lopez'

Latest late-night show averages 3 million total viewers

Nov 11, 2009

Turner's strategy of debuting the new "George Lopez Show" on three networks paid off with solid numbers Monday night.

"Lopez" averaged 3.2 million total viewers and 1.8 million adults 18-49 for its premiere, airing on TBS, TNT and truTV at 11 p.m. The show will regularly air on TBS.

On its home network, Lopez averaged 1.7 million viewers, including 1.03 million 18-49s and 608,000 18-34s. Turner claims that's more than the season-to-date averages for late-night shows including NBC's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and CBS's "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson."

Of course, TBS promoted the heck out of the show during the baseball postseason, ensuring strong sampling. The real trick will be keeping the numbers high for the nightly series in the days and weeks ahead.

After all, TBS's previous late-night show, "Frank TV," with comic Frank Caliendo, premiered well two years ago but was canceled after its audience dwindled in the months that followed.

"Lopez" wasn't the only program to draw strong ratings on cable Monday. ESPN's "Monday Night Football" game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos drew the second-biggest audience on cable this year, trailing only September's all-time-best game between the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers.

"MNF" averaged 16 million total viewers and 11.4 million households, making it the fifth-most-watched cable broadcast of all time in the latter. The program is averaging 10.5 million households this season.
