'Camp Rock 2'
becomes year's top movie

Disney Channel sequel draws 8 million total viewers

It's certainly no "High School Musical 2," but "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam" proved a solid hit for the Disney Channel over the weekend.

The much-anticipated sequel to the 2008 film became the No. 1 movie on cable this year, averaging 8 million total viewers for Friday night's debut.

It also ranks as TV's No. 1 movie this year among kids 6-11 with 3.1 million total viewers and a 12.8 rating, and first among tweens 9-14 with 3.2 million viewers and a 13.0 rating.

It also became the most-watched Labor Day weekend broadcast ever among kids 6-11 and 9-14.

None of this is all that surprising considering the movie stars the Jonas Brothers, the most popular boy band of the past few years, and was a sequel to an equally successful original movie.

However, "Camp Rock 2" fell well short of becoming the No. 1 Disney movie of all time. That honor belongs to "HSM2," which drew more than 17 million viewers in 2007.

The original "Rock" drew stronger numbers, debuting while Jonas fever was still growing two years ago; it's since arguably died down a bit.

The first "Rock" drew 8.9 million total viewers, second only behind "HSM2" on Disney, and 3.5 million 6-11s as well as 3.4 million 9-14s.

Still, millions more likely watched "Camp Rock 2" during one of its multiple reruns over the weekend, including a karaoke version, much like Disney did with "HSM" years ago.
