With 'Idol,' Fox
scoots out ahead again

Return of the hit show pushes network past CBS to regain the No. 1 spot

Jan 25, 2012
Share |

Even a much-diminished "American Idol" is a powerful weapon for Fox.

The return of the hit singing show, along with a record-breaking NFC Championship, helped push Fox ahead of CBS for first place this season among adults 18-49 after falling behind in December.

Fox had the best week for any network this season, averaging a 7.7 adults 18-49 rating and 19 share for the week ended Jan. 22, according to Nielsen.

That was more than the other Big Five networks combined, on a week that admittedly included a lot of reruns. Fox had the top four shows on broadcast, including three episodes of "Idol."

And it was just enough to boost the network back into first place after spending most of the fall tied with CBS for No. 1. Fox had fallen slightly behind with a slew of December reruns.

Fox is now averaging a 3.3 rating and 9 share this season, with CBS second with a 3.2/9. ABC and NBC are tied for third at 2.5/7, with Univision fifth at 1.5/4 and the CW sixth with a 0.8/2.

Fox is also seeing the biggest gains over last year at this time, up 18 percent, while CBS is up 3 percent.

ABC and Univision are even to last year and NBC is off 11 percent. The CW is down the most, 20 percent.

Depending on whether "Idol" can maintain last week's ratings, Fox could pull farther ahead of CBS, but that's a big depends.

The show is off double-digit percentages from last year and the competition on ABC and CBS crept closer than ever during last week's Wednesday and Thursday premieres.

Still, even a fading "Idol" is still stronger than anything else on television. The three editions of the show averaged a 7.9 (Sunday), 7.4 (Wednesday) and 5.7 (Thursday).

The two next-highest-rated shows, CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" and ABC's "Modern Family," averaged a 5.3 and 5.1 apiece, respectively.

In broadcast ratings for the week ended Jan. 22:

Among adults 18-49, Fox was first for the week with a 7.7 average rating and a 19 share, followed by CBS and ABC at 2.1/5, NBC at 1.5/5, Univision at 1.4/4, Telemundo and CW at 0.5/1, ION and TeleFutura at 0.3/1 and Azteca and Estrella at 0.1/0.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): 1. Fox's "NFC Championship" 21.4; 2. Fox's "American Idol-Special" 7.9; 3. Fox's "American Idol-Wednesday" 7.4; 4. Fox's "American Idol-Thursday" 5.7; 5. CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" 5.3.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 1. Fox's "NFC Championship" 57.64 million; 2. Fox's "American Idol-Wednesday" 21.93 million; 3. Fox's "American Idol-Special" 19.74 million; 4. Fox's "American Idol-Thursday" 18.02 million; 5. CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" 15.84 million.

Top five time-shifted English-language Big Five shows (18-49s, by Live+SD versus Live+7 playback, week ended Jan. 8): 1. ABC's "Modern Family" 2.4 increase (up 42.1 percent); 2. ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" 1.6 increase (up 35.6 percent); 3. ABC's "Once Upon a Time" 1.3 increase (up 35.1 percent); 4. CBS's "Two and a Half Men" 1.3 increase (up 28.9 percent); 5. CBS's "Hawaii Five-0" 1.2 increase (up 41.4 percent).

Show on the rise: Fox's "The Finder," Thursday 9 p.m. The new drama benefited from its new "American Idol" lead-in, jumping 29 percent week-to-week among 18-49s from a 1.7 rating for its debut to a 2.2.

Show on the decline: NBC's "Whitney," Wednesday 8 p.m. Airing against "American Idol" hurt the first-year comedy as last week it posted a 1.6 among 18-49s, down 20 percent from a 2.0 the previous week.
