There she is,
'Miss America,' aglow again

Once hugely popular beauty pageant is attracting new audiences

Jan 19, 2012
Share |

"Miss America" will never be the ratings draw it once was, but the pageant, once on the brink of extinction, is slowly inching its way back to cultural relevance.

The annual beauty competition drew its best ratings in eight years over the weekend and grew its young adult audience for the second straight year on ABC.

"Miss America" averaged a 1.8 adults 18-49 rating Saturday night at 9 p.m., according to Nielsen, up 13 percent over last year's 1.6.

On any other night of the week, a 1.8 rating would be pretty bad, but on a Saturday, airing against a football game that drew 34.2 million total viewers on CBS, it's decent.

It was the highest rating for a "Miss America" since the pageant moved from ABC to cable eight years ago, and ABC was the top non-sports network during the timeslot.

The key to judging "Miss America's" performance is adjusting expectations. It will never again be a major draw like it was two decades ago, when 20 million people tuned in. Young viewers consider pageants a relic of earlier times, and viewership for nearly everything on TV have fallen off over the past few decades.

But as a placefiller on a Saturday night, ABC could do worse. The network has averaged a 1.7 on Saturday nights this season, but that number was inflated by a handful of high-rated college football games last fall.

The network is believed to be paying a miniscule rights fee for "Miss America," which struck out on CMT and TLC before returning to broadcast last year.

And it gives the network a chance to showcase "Dancing with the Stars" co-host Brooke Burke and "The Bachelor" host Chris Harrison, who co-hosted the pageant this year.

Show on the rise: Fox's "The Simpsons," Sunday 8 p.m. The long-running animated comedy benefited from a huge NFL lead-in, jumping 135 percent week-to-week among 18-49s from a 2.3 rating to a 5.4 to become the top scripted show on TV.

Show on the decline: CBS's "Unforgettable," Tuesday 10 p.m. The drama posted a 2.1 among 18-49s, down 19 percent from a 2.6 the previous week.
