Surprise leader
in DVRed shows: CBS

Has 10 of top 25 time-shifted shows on broadcast

Jan 20, 2010
Share |

Fox may be ahead this season in the ratings, jumping into first place among adults 18-49 last fall, but CBS leads in another very telling category: top DVRed shows.

That may come as a surprise considering CBS's rather fuddy duddy reputation. It is the grayest of the Big Four networks, and its old-skewing procedurals like "CSI: Miami" and "NCIS" hardly seem candidates for the hip DVR crowd.

But in fact CBS has 10 of the top 25 most-DVRed programs on television, two more than the No. 2 network, ABC. That's based on Nielsen's live-plus-seven-day-playback DVR ratings.

CBS's "The Mentalist" and "CSI" and "The Big Bang Theory" rank fourth and tie for fifth, respectively, giving the network three top 10 shows, one fewer than ABC.

"Mentalist" gains a full point from DVR playback, while "Bang" and "CSI" jump 0.9, more than shows like Fox's "Fringe" and NBC's "Heroes," among the leaders in live-to-L+7 percentage DVR gains.

Even programs such as "CSI: Miami" and "NCIS" enjoy bigger DVR viewing than anything on the young-skewing CW.

There are several reasons for this, the first being that CBS actually has a large number of shows that do well among 18-49s despite its reputation. It has 10 top-25 programs this season, most of them the same ones that draw large DVR audiences.

Compare that to season leader Fox, which only has five, or ABC, which has six.

CBS is also seeing big time-shifting gains for programs that air in competitive timeslots. "Mentalist" and "CSI," for example, go head to head with ABC's "Private Practice" and "Grey's Anatomy," which usually draw higher live-plus-same-day ratings.

But it's clear from the big DVR bump that some viewers are simply time-shifting the competing CBS shows to watch later because they are already watching ABC.

Finally, the profile of DVR owners is changing. We've passed the early adoption phase to the point where now 34 percent of all Nielsen households have DVRs, including those in the upper end of the 18-49 demographic who are time-shifting those somewhat older-skewing CBS shows.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): 1. Fox’s “American Idol-Tuesday” 11.8; 2. CBS’s “AFC Divisional Playoff” 11.0; 3. Fox’s “American Idol-Wednesday” 10.1; 4. CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” 5.7; 5. NBC’s “Golden Globe Awards” 5.5.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 1. CBS’s “AFC Divisional Playoff” 30.57 million; 2. Fox’s “American Idol-Tuesday” 29.94 million; 3. Fox’s “American Idol-Wednesday” 26.39 million; 4. CBS’s “NCIS” 20.85 million; 5. CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” 17.27 million.

Top five time-shifted English-language Big Five shows (18-49s, by Live+7 playback, week ended Dec. 27): 1. CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” 0.6 increase (up 17 percent); 2. ABC’s “Scrubs” o.6 increase (up 38 percent); 3. NBC’s “The Sing-off” 0.5 increase (up 20 percent); 4. CBS’s “Criminal Minds” 0.4 increase (up 17 percent); 5. ABC’s “Better off Ted” 0.4 increase (up 33 percent).

Show on the rise: “Golden Globe Awards” NBC, Sunday 8 p.m. The annual awards show averaged a 5.5 rating among viewers 18-49, up 12 percent from a 4.9 last year.

Show on the decline: “The Biggest Loser” NBC, Tuesday 8 p.m. The weight loss competition suffered a bit against the season premiere of Fox’s “American Idol,” slipping 30 percent week-to-week among 18-49s from a 4.6 rating to a 3.2.
