Rock'em sock'em
Dick Clark New Year's

ABC's Times Square year-ender averages an 8.7

Jan 6, 2010
Share |

Carson Daly may be gaining, but most people prefer to spend their New Year's Eve with Dick Clark, even as he appears less and less on the broadcast that bears his name.

ABC's "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" once again pounded the competition on Dec. 31, bettering the evening's No. 2 countdown show on NBC by 67 percent.

"Rockin'" averaged an 8.7 household rating from 11:30 p.m. to 1:15 a.m., according to Nielsen metered-market ratings. Final ratings won't be available until next week.

That was up 2 percent from last year and well ahead of NBC's "New Year's Eve with Carson Daly," which averaged a 5.2 rating from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. That marked an all-time high for the show.

The competition was negligible on Fox and CBS. Fox's "Billboard's New Year's Eve Live" managed just a 2.7, down 21 percent from a 3.4 for the network's New Year's Eve special last year.

CBS didn't even bother with original programming. A rerun of "The Late Show with David Letterman" averaged a 2.4 at 11:35 p.m., off 4 percent from last year's 2.5.

A big part of Clark's success is simply familiarity. While the ABC show has been running for 38 years, NBC and Fox's New Year's specials are relatively new.

Daly's began in 2004, and this was the first year Fox collaborated with Billboard, though it did air a New Year's Eve bash last year hosted by Spike Feresten ("Talkshow with Spike Feresten") and Mark Thompson ("Hole in the Wall").

Many people grew up watching Clark and tune into him out of habit. Some may not even be aware that NBC and Fox have specials.

Too, Clark's longtime status as top New Year's Eve special helps ABC secure the top guests every year. The Black Eyed Peas' Fergie co-hosted this year's bash, along with "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, who joined Clark a few years ago.

The ABC special also featured Selena Gomez, new teen heartthrob Justin Bieber, Daughtry, Jennifer Lopez and several other musical acts.

NBC had Jay-Z and Rihanna, a strong draw, and Green Day, but nowhere near the depth of ABC's roster. And Fox, as in past years, was headlined by a former "Idol" contestant, Kris Allen, as well as pinup Carmen Electra, who is more of an internet draw than a television one.

Finally, while New Year's isn't generally thought of as a family holiday, many families do celebrate it at home together, and Clark's special is definitely the family-friendliest of the three.

Fox is always edgy, and Daly, who hosts a 1:35 a.m. show on NBC weeknights, is not as well known to parents as Seacrest and Clark, two squeaky-clean music personalities. In terms of safe bets for family viewing, ABC wins hands down.

Still, just how long Clark will remain with the broadcast remains to be seen. He is still recovering from a stroke five years ago that left his speech slurred, and many believe that ABC is grooming Seacrest to take over the countdown from him soon.
