In faceoff, 'Big Bang'
tops 'American Idol'

CBS sitcom takes a 12 percent lead in 18-49s over Fox hit

Feb 1, 2012
Share |

The CBS sitcom "The Big Bang" may become the first timeslot competitor to ever finish ahead of "Idol" for the full season, a year after "Idol" held a solid advantage over the comedy.

Both shows air at 8 p.m. on Thursday, though "Idol" runs a half hour longer than "Bang." In their shared 8 to 8:30 slot, "Bang" held a small but notable advantage over its rival last week.

"Bang" averaged a season-high 5.5 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen, 12 percent ahead of "Idol's" 4.9. It also held the edge among viewers, though by only 4 percent, with 16.13 million to "Idol's" 15.56 million.

The previous week, in "Idol's" Thursday premiere, the two were tied in 18-49s at 5.3 in their shared half hour.

Each week "Idol" rose significantly in its second half hour, raising its overall hourly rating. But in the head-to-head matchup, "Bang" clearly has the edge.

That says as much about "Idol" as it does about "Bang," the No. 3 scripted show on television this season behind "Two and a Half Men" and "Modern Family."

"Bang's" ratings have risen as the season went on, perhaps in part because the show is newly available in syndication and thus has been exposed to millions more new viewers. "Bang" reruns are so popular on TBS that it was actually the No. 1 comedy on cable last month.

"Bang's" gains come as "Idol" declines.

The show is down double-digit percentages from last year and may be suffering from comparisons to the plethora of other singing competitions on TV, including Fox's own "The X Factor" and NBC's "The Voice."

Still, there's no shame in "Idol's" fall. The show is now in its 11th season, and no program can continue at such lofty levels forever. And despite falling behind "Bang" in their shared timeslot, "Idol" is still the No. 1 non-sports show on television this season.
