Fox falls behind
CBS at midseason

Averaging a 3.0/8 in 18-49s to 3.2/9, dragged down by reruns

Game-changer: Fox should quickly shoot ahead when 'American Idol' returns
Everyone expects Fox to surge well ahead of the competition after "American Idol" returns to the schedule next week.

But if the network wins its eighth straight season among adults 18-49, it will be doing so from behind. After spending most of the fall tied with CBS for first place, Fox slipped behind its rival over the past three weeks.

CBS now holds a 7 percent lead over its rival, averaging a 3.2 adults 18-49 rating and 9 share season to date through Sunday, according to Nielsen.

Fox is now in second with a 3.0/8, followed by ABC and NBC, tied for third with a 2.5/7 apiece. Univision is fifth with a 1.5/4, and the CW sixth with a 0.8/2.

CBS and Fox are still pacing ahead of last year, while ABC is even and NBC is down.

Fox fell behind over late December and early January with a dearth of original programming. While CBS shows perform well in repeats, meaning the network rarely cedes ground when it goes into reruns, the other networks, including Fox, draw very low numbers for their reruns.

Fox finished in a tie for fourth place with Univision last week, the week ended Jan. 8, with a plethora of reruns dotting the schedule. The network averaged a mere 1.4/4 rating.

That was in contrast to CBS, which won the week with a 3.3/9. Not only did CBS have four nights of originals, it also aired a highly rated playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos that bled into primetime Sunday, averaging a 15.3 rating, the highest for any show this season.

Yet CBS's lead will be short-lived. In all but one of the previous seven seasons, Fox came into January well behind and surged ahead within weeks on the strength of "Idol."

That should be the case yet again this year. "Idol" returns a week from tonight.
