Fox headed to a
sweeps win, if by a nose

Edge over CBS narrows in the final days of November rating period

Nov 23, 2011
Share |

Fox is still on pace for the second November sweeps victory in network history, though its margin of victory will be a lot closer than it seemed earlier this month.

With three nights left to tally in the four-week sweeps period used to set ad rates for local stations, Fox is 6 percent ahead of No. 2 CBS and remains the only network to see gains over last season. (Note: An earlier version of this story credited the World Series for part of those gains, but Fox says that it is actually up more if the World Series is taken out.)

Fox is averaging a 3.3 adults 18-49 rating from Oct. 27 through Sunday night, a 10 percent gain over last year.

CBS is second with a 3.1 rating, down 3 percent from last year, followed by ABC, which is averaging a 2.7 and is down 7 percent from last year.

NBC is also down 7 percent, to a 2.6. Univision is in fifth place with a 1.5/4, and the CW is in sixth with a 0.8.

Sweeps ends tonight.

CBS has been gaining on Fox, but not quite fast enough to overtake its rival in the final days of the month. A week ago Fox had a 21 percent lead, but CBS saw its average jump by 0.3 over the past week to cut that gap.

CBS was boosted by NFL overrun on Sunday night, which averaged a 7.5, as well as its strong comedy lineup.

In fact, five CBS comedies placed among the top seven shows last week, the week ended Nov. 20, with "Two and a Half Men" the week's No. 2 scripted series behind ABC's "Modern Family" with a 5.4 rating.

Fox, meanwhile, has struggled a bit since the World Series ended. Ratings for new shows "The X Factor," "Terra Nova" and "New Girl" are down from their pre-baseball start, and returning programs like "House," "Fringe" and "Family Guy" have also taken ratings hits.

In fact, without sports added to the mix, CBS would finish the month No. 1, followed by ABC, then Fox, according to ABC research.

***

Top five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): 1. NBC's "Sunday Night Football" 7.5; 2. ABC's "Modern Family" 5.5; 3. CBS's "Two and a Half Men" 5.4; 4. CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" 5.3; 5. CBS's "2 Broke Girls" 4.8.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 1. NBC's "Sunday Night Football" 20.31 million; 2. CBS's "NCIS" 20.00 million; 3. ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" 17.95 million; 4. CBS's "NCIS: Los Angeles" 15.15 million; 5. ABC's "Dancing with the Stars Results" 15.10 million.

Top five time-shifted English-language Big Five shows (18-49s, by Live+SD versus Live+7 playback, week ended Nov. 6): 1. ABC's "Modern Family" 2.6 increase (up 45.6 percent); 2. ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" 1.6 increase (up 44.4 percent); 3. Fox's "House" 1.6 increase (up 64.0 percent); 4. CBS's "Two and a Half Men" 1.5 increase (up 31.9 percent); 5. Fox's "New Girl" 1.5 increase (up 41.7 percent).

Show on the rise: CBS's "Blue Bloods," Friday 10 p.m. The cop drama averaged a 2.0 rating among 18-49s, up 18 percent from a 1.7 the previous week.

Show on the decline: Fox's "The Simpsons," Sunday 8 p.m. Without the benefit of a late NFL game on Fox, "Simpsons" slipped 21 percent week-to-week among 18-49s from a 3.4 rating to a 2.7.
