It’s been nearly a decade since “Ugly Betty” first made its mark on U.S. television, with the original Colombian novela “Yo Soy Betty La Fea” a huge hit for Telemundo.
Since then the show, about a dowdy secretary who transforms into a beauty and wins the heart of her boss, has aired multiple times on multiple networks and has been reworked into numerous versions around the world, including on ABC as “Ugly Betty.”
Still, its original version continues to be an audience draw, now generating big ratings for Univision’s sister network TeleFutura.
The No. 3 Spanish-language network is seeing its ratings soar since the show debuted in February.
For the week ending July 26, TeleFutura had an average primetime audience of just under 1 million viewers, up 116 percent from the same week in 2008, outranking the CW and just 100,000 viewers shy of Telemundo.
Its 18-49 rating was up 117 percent, to a 0.4, just behind Telemundo with a 0.5 but still well behind Univision, the No. 1 Spanish-language network and No. 5 network overall, with a 1.2 rating.
For the full month of July, “Betty” averaged an amazing 1.1 million viewers for TeleFutura, up 156 percent from its Monday-Friday 10 p.m. timeslot last year. The network also saw strong July ratings for the court show “Veredicto Final” (“Final Verdict”) and its daily movies at 8 p.m., “Cine de las Estrellas.”
Each of the Spanish-language networks has been doing well.
For the year, from September through last week, Univision was up 8 percent from the year-earlier period, to 3.8 million viewers. Telemundo was up 13 percent, to 1.2 million viewers. TeleFutura was up 8 percent, to an average 690,000 viewers.

Top five time-shifted English-language Big Five shows (18-49s, by Live+7 playback, week ended July 5): 1. Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance - Wednesday” 1.63 million (up 37 percent); 2. Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance - Thursday” 1.57 million (up 38 percent); 3. ABC’s “The Bachelorette” 1.13 million (up 30 percent); 4. ABC’s “Wipeout” 895,000 (up 20 percent); 5. NBC’s “America’s Got Talent - Tuesday” 756,000 (up 15 percent).
Show on the rise: “The Mentalist,” CBS, Thursday 10 p.m. A Thursday-night repeat jumped 18 percent week-to-week among 18-49s, from a 1.7 rating to a 2.0.
Show on the decline: “CSI: NY,” CBS, Wednesday 10 p.m. A repeat fell 22 percent week-to-week among 18-49s, from a 1.8 rating to a 1.4.
