“American
Idol's" Bo Bice could very well be the next Clay Aiken. Not in terms of style, of
course. Bice’s rocker thing is about as far away from
Aiken’s clean and non-threatening image as you can get.
But both were runners-up, and now it looks like Bice will
follow Aiken in outselling the person who was chosen as the top
"Idol," Carrie Underwood, who won last week. Aiken outsold season-two winner
Ruben Studdard.
As of this morning, Bice’s new
single featuring the songs “Inside Your Heaven” and
“Vehicle” ranks No. 1 on Barnes & Noble’s online
bestsellers list. Making the feat even more impressive is the fact
that the single won’t be released until June 21. Preorders are
driving the entire craze.
By contrast, Underwood’s first single, which
also includes “Inside Your Heaven” as well as “Independence
Day,” ranks at No. 3 on the Barnes & Noble list. Her single is released
before Bice’s, on June 14. (Neither is currently on Amazon.com’s top sellers list, which updates hourly.)
Of course just about anything
with the “American Idol” name on it is going to sell well. On
last week’s Billboard 200, “American Idol Season 4: The
Showstoppers” placed No. 6, one of five new releases to make the
top 10 during the week ended May 22. This morning the album was also
No. 7 on the Barnes & Noble list and No. 10 on the Amazon.com
list.
The other four albums to make
Billboard’s top 10 in their first week were “Mesmerize” by
System of a Down, “Honkytonk University” by Toby Keith, “Album
II” by Kem and “Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection” by
Def Leppard.
Meanwhile, at the movies over the
weekend
two new releases made nice runs but neither was able to knock
“Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” out of the top
spot.
“Sith” pulled in another
$70.75 million over the weekend, pushing its two-week total to
$271.91 million.
“Madagascar,” the animated
film about animals living in New York’s Central Park Zoo, was
second with $61 million in ticket sales, followed
by a $60 million showing for “The Longest Yard,” the heavily
pushed football remake starring Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and Burt
Reynolds.
“Episode III’s” $271
million total is quickly approaching the $302 million earned
domestically by “Episode II: Attack of the Clones” in 2002,
though it still has a lot of work to do to catch the more than $431
million brought in by “Episode I: The Phantom Menace” in 1999.
In video rentals, new releases “In Good
Company” and “Assault on Precinct 13” were among Billboard’s
top three during the week ended May 22, but neither was able to
knock
“National Treasure” from the No. 1 position.
In books, Michael Connelly’s
new “The Closers” ranked No. 1 on The New York Times hardcover
fiction bestseller list during the week ended May 21, pushing the
rest of the top four down one spot each.
In nonfiction, Harry G.
Frankfurt’s "On Bull----" rose from No. 7 to No. 1 during the
week, dropping Thomas L. Friedman’s “The World Is Flat” out of
the top spot to No.
