For teens, 'Chaotic' 
was just the worst

Britney Spears' reality romance romp sank fastest

    When it comes to really bad television, teens are no less perceptive than their elders. A 15-year-old recognizes a dreadful show just as easily as a 35-year-old, even when the dreadful show stars teen magnet Britney Spears.
   And so it was that Spears’ lurid “Britney and Kevin: Chaotic,” about how Spears met and fell for her husband,
ended its five-episode run on UPN last week with an especially resounding thud among teens--more so in fact than among all other major demographics.
   The 9 p.m. Tuesday show’s finale averaged 164,000 teen viewers, down 66 percent from the 481,000 who watched “Chaotic’s” premiere last month, to average a mere 346,000 teen viewers in its run.
   By contrast, “Chaotic”
lost less than 50 percent of its debut audience among 18-34s and 18-49s.
   Spears certainly hasn’t lost her cool among the young crowd. MTV’s daily teen video fest “TRL” recently retired her video “Everytime” after 50 days on the countdown.
   “Chaotic’s” problem with teens was its problem with every demo: It was just a bad show. There was no plotline, no suspense and awful production values. 
   Spears and husband Kevin Federline came off as self-centered and clueless, and not in the fun, cartoonish way that pop princess Jessica Simpson did on MTV’s “Newlyweds” earlier this year. That show's finale pulled 591,000 teens, four times the number that tuned in for  “Chaotic’s” last episode.
    “It was badly executed and difficult to watch,” says Bob Thompson, director of the Center for Study of Pop Culture at Syracuse University. “There was so little effort to accommodate the people who were watching it.”
   With Spears talking nonstop about sex between cigarette puffs, the show probably wasn’t a favorite for parents, either, which also may have led to the teen exodus.

   Meanwhile, in other ratings for younger viewers for the week ended June 19:

Among teens 12-17, Fox was first with a 1.6 average rating and 7 share, followed by ABC with a 1.5/6. UPN and the WB tied at third with a 1.1/5, followed by CBS with 0.8/4 and NBC at 0.6/3.

Among people 12-34, Fox was No. 1 with a 2.2 average rating and 9 share. ABC was second with 2.0/8, CBS third with 1.3/5, NBC fourth with 1.2/5, UPN fifth with 1.1/4 and the WB sixth with 1.0/4.

The top five shows among 9-14s: Nickelodeon’s “Ned Declassified” took all top five spots on cable and broadcast last week, for the Tuesday episodes that aired from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

The top five shows among 12-17s: 1. “Family Guy” (Fox), 2. “American Dad” (Fox), 3. “Family Guy” (Adult Swim, Thursday), 4. NBA Finals: Game 5 (ABC), 5. “Family Guy” (Adult Swim, Monday)

The top five shows among 12-24s: 1. “Family Guy” (Fox), 2. “American Dad” (Fox), 3. NBA Finals: Game 5 (ABC), 4. “The Simpsons” (Fox), 5. “Real World Road Rules Challenge: Inferno II” (MTV)

Cable shows that made the top 15 among 18-24s were: “Real World Road Rules Challenge: Inferno II” (MTV), “Family Guy” (Adult Swim, episodes Monday through Thursday), “Futurama” (Adult Swim)
