Lots of blow, little 
go for 'Catscratch' 

Low ratings for premiere of Nick critter cartoon

   From all the pre-premiere buzz it received, Nickelodeon’s new cartoon “Catscratch” sounded as if it might be the next “SpongeBob, SquarePants.” But it’s not even close.
  “Catscratch” had a disappointing debut Saturday among Nickelodeon’s most loyal viewers, kids 2-11. In its Saturday 8 p.m. timeslot, the show averaged 1.44 million viewers in that demo, or about a third fewer than “SpongeBob’s” most-watched episode last week.
  “Catscratch” didn’t even make the top 30 on cable in 2-11s, getting outdrawn by such lesser-buzz shows “Unfabulous,” “The Amanda Show” and “Lazytown,” all on Nickelodeon.
  The show didn’t make the top 30 in 2-11s, 6-11s or 9-14s, either. That was a surprise considering how much hype surrounded the show’s launch.
  Nickelodeon clearly has high hopes for it. The network gave the show an initial order of six episodes but ordered 14 additional episodes two weeks ago after seeing the first few shows.
   “Catscratch” got a big pre-launch promotional push, too. The show debuted on the web several days before its TV premiere as the centerpiece program on the TurboNick web site.
   And papers like The New York Times, San Jose Mercury-News and Boston Globe carried articles on it, a rarity for an unproven kids’ show.
   The show follows a trio of cats who become billionaires after their eccentric owner dies and leaves them everything. “Seinfeld’s” Wayne Knight, “Jimmy Neutron’s” Rob Paulsen and “Kids in the Hall’s” Kevin McDonald provide the lead voices.
  Perhaps the show’s concept was too dull for Nick, where talking cats are relatively tame compared with the network’s fairy godparents or underwater sea life. Maybe young viewers were outdoors Saturday night instead of inside watching TV. Or perhaps people didn’t like the preview they saw on the web.
  The show didn’t really catch with any demographic. Only 2.26 million total viewers tuned in for the premiere.
  
   Meanwhile, in other ratings for younger viewers for the week ended July 10:

Among teens 12-17: Fox was first with a 1.4 rating and 6 share, ABC second with 1.0/4, UPN third with 0.9/4, CBS and the WB tied at fourth with 0.7/3 and NBC sixth with 0.5/2.

Among people 12-34: Fox was first with a 1.8/7, followed by ABC in second with 1.4/5. CBS and NBC tied at third with a 1.2/5, followed by UPN with 1.0/4 and the WB with 0.8/3.

The top five shows among 9-14s: 1. “Zoey 101” (Nickelodeon); 2 & 3. “Ned Declassified” (Nickelodeon, 2 and 2:30 p.m.); 4. “Zoey 101” (Nickelodeon); 5. “Family Guy” (Adult Swim)

The top five shows among 12-17s: 1. “Family Guy” (Adult Swim, Thursday 11:30 p.m.); 2. “Real World XVI” (MTV); 3. “Made” (MTV); 4 & 5. “Family Guy” (Adult Swim, Wednesday, Thursday 11 p.m.)

The top five shows among 12-24s: 1. “Real World XVI” (MTV); 2. “Family Guy” (Adult Swim); 3. “Family Guy” (Fox); 4. “Family Guy” (Fox, Sunday); 5. “Simpsons” (Fox)
