'Committed,' plain
crazy for a laugh

NBC sure could use a few. It may get some.

After the bombing of  “Father of the Pride” early in this television season in the Tuesday 9 p.m. slot, NBC tries again with tonight’s debut of “Committed” in the Tuesday 9:30 timeslot. But the sitcom faces a tough slog, and it's unlikely to halt the troubled network’s slide in ratings. The question is whether it will help it along.
From Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline (“Murphy Brown,” “Roseanne”), “Committed” stars Josh Cooke and Jennifer Finnigan as yet another opposites-attract couple. But this couple is truly wacky, each in their own way. They fall in love and go on to a series of misadventures at a frenzied pace.
But the show suffers at two levels, and one certainly is a lack of an inspired premise. Critics are panning it as too nutso for words and largely inane fodder.
But “Committed” also faces killer competition. Tonight it goes up against “Amazing Race 6” on CBS and the FedEx Orange Bowl on ABC.
Tuesday night has been problematic for NBC since “Frasier” left the schedule last spring, as the numbers illustrate.
A year ago this week, “Happy Family,” airing at 9:30 with “Frasier” as its lead-in, drew a 3.8 rating among adults 18-49.
By contrast, this season "Pride" averaged a 3.5. And last week, “Scrubs,” airing at 9:30 in the time slot “Committed” will occupy, pulled a 2.5. Granted, it was a repeat and it was during a week of typically low TV viewership. Yet it sets something of a bar for “Committed," and a relatively low one. Anything better than a 3.8 will represent improvement for NBC.
