Ho-hum debut
for 'My Kind of Town'

ABC variety show under-wows, with 2.9 average

By Diego Vasquez

Even with the aid of an original “Extreme Make Over: Home Edition” lead-in, very few wanted to visit “My Kind of Town.”
ABC’s new hybrid variety-reality show, which debuted last night at 9 p.m., averaged a 2.9 overnight rating among viewers 18-49, losing 38 percent of “Home Edition’s” lead-in rating of 4.7.
“My Kind of Town” is unlike any other show that’s premiered this summer. It features members of a small town flown into a New York studio to compete in various skits and comedic bits. One of the audience members is chosen at the end to compete for a prize for all 200 town members in attendance.
The show’s lack of focus perhaps led viewers to turn away. It wasn’t among the summer’s worst bombs by any stretch but it also shows little promise for coming weeks, when “Home Edition” will be in reruns.
By 9:30, “Town’s” rating had fallen 13 percent to a 2.7. But “Town” was still comfortably ahead of the premieres for NBC’s “Meet Mister Mom” (1.6), ABC’s “The Scholar” (1.7) and NBC’s “The Law Firm” (1.9).

“Town” averaged 7.09 million total viewers, 38 percent off the 11.4 million “Home Edition” averaged in the previous hour.

Though the new episode of "Home Edition" didn't do a whole lot for “Town,” it did help ABC finish first for the night among viewers 18-49s with a 3.1 average rating and a 9 share, according to Nielsen overnights. Fox finished second at 2.4/7, CBS third at 2.0/6, NBC fourth at 1.8/5 and the AB fifth at 0.8/2.

ABC started the night in the lead with a 2.8 average rating at 7 p.m. for the first hour of "Home Edition." CBS was second with a 2.1 for "60 Minutes" and Fox third with a 1.5 for repeats of "Malcolm in the Middle" (1.5) and "King of the Hill" (1.6).

At 8 p.m. ABC led with its 4.7 average for the second hour of "Home Edition," the night's highest-rated hour among 18-49s. Fox was second that hour with a 2.8 average for repeats of "The Simpsons" (2.7) and "Family Guy" (2.9) and CBS third with a 1.7 for a "Cold Case" rerun.

At 9 p.m. Fox averaged a 29 rating for repeats of "Family Guy" (3.2) and "American Dad" (2.7), tying the network for first for the hour with ABC and its premiere of "Town." NBC was third that hour with a 2.4 for a repeat of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and CBS fourth with a 1.9 for the first hour of "Living with the Dead."

NBC took the lead at 10 p.m. with a 2.5 average for a repeat of "Crossing Jordan," followed by a 2.2 for CBS for the second hour of "Dead" and ABC third with a 2.1 for a repeat of "Desperate Housewives."

CBS led the night among households with a 5.8 average rating and a 10 share. ABC was second at 4.7/8, NBC third at 4.5/8, Fox fourth at 3.3/6 and the WB sixth at 1.2/2.
