Lizzie McGuire, Kim Possible, Raven and now Penny Proud.
The 16-year-old star of the cartoon series “The Proud Family”
is Disney Channel’s new tween queen.
More than 1.2 million girls 6-11 tuned in to last week’s
Disney Channel original movie “The Proud Family Movie,” in which
the animated star celebrated her 16th birthday, pushing the telecast
to No. 1 for the day on all cable and broadcast in that demo.
That pushed Disney Channel to its best-ever weekly average
among girls 6-11, a 3.9, for the week ended Aug. 21.
The Friday 8 p.m. telecast was also No. 1 for the day among
boys 6-11 and tweens. It had a strong household delivery as well,
earning a 4.1 rating.
Disney has a knack for connecting with young girls who’ve
moved beyond “SpongeBob” but aren’t old enough for “The O.C.”
The network already has “Kim Possible,” “That’s So Raven” and “Lizzie McGuire,”
the last two of which have set network records among
girls 6-11s.
Last week, “The Proud Family Movie” finished ahead of
all three shows in that demo, and by a healthy margin.
The movie shoots off of the already-established Disney
series “The Proud Family,” about a black family who’s the
source of constant embarrassment for oldest daughter Penny. She has
an overprotective dad, wacky mom and twin siblings named Bee Bee
and Cee Cee, not to mention Grandma Suga Mama.
The movie’s family-friendly Friday timeslot helped it
attract more viewers than the regularly scheduled series, which
usually airs
weekdays at 4:30 p.m. The movie averaged more than three times what
the series did for the week ended Aug. 21, when “Proud Family”
averaged 686,000 among 6-11s for nine telecasts in various timeslots, according to Nielsen.
The movie boosted DisneyChannel.com as well with the
online game challenge “The Proud Family Attack of the G-Nomes.”
On Friday, the site drew 867,076 unique visitors, its best traffic
ever.
Meanwhile, in other ratings for younger
viewers for the week ended Aug. 21:
Among teens 12-17: Fox was first with a 1.8 rating
and 7 share, followed by ABC and UPN tied at second with 1.2/5. CBS
was fourth with 0.9/4, just barely edging the WB at fifth with
0.9/3. NBC was sixth with 0.6/2.
Among people 12-34: Fox was first with 2.0/7, CBS
second with 1.6/6, ABC third with 1.5/5, NBC fourth with 1.3/5, UPN
fifth with 1.1/4 and the WB sixth with 0.8/3.
The top five shows among 9-14s:
1&2. “Drake & Josh” (Nickelodeon, Saturday, 4 and 4:30
p.m.); 3. “Full House” (Nick at Nite, Thursday, 5 p.m.); 4.
“Drake & Josh” (Nickelodeon, Saturday, 5 p.m.); 5.
“SpongeBob” (Nickelodeon, Monday, 5 p.m.)
The top five shows among 12-17s:
1. “My Super Sweet Sixteen” (MTV, Monday, 10:30 p.m.); 2.
